hello
Just asking where to get copper Roker box gaskets from for the A10 etc, I PM TTjohn but No answer as it might be on Hol`s
so do anyone know anywhere else have them ?
not needed i have 7 A series no rocker leak, just make sure mating surface are clean, and good quality gasket and sealer used, i sometimes lap rocker boxes on a plate of glass if the are marker, if the head surface are damaged usually on alloy these can be faced by a good miller, Basically copper is a cheat for bad mating surfaces
well I have used SRM gasket and that leaked then I have use DF gaskets and I have used 3 bond with all of them still leaked.....also done the trick on the glass plate with the rocker box still leak......so must be the head .........but was hoping the copper gaskets might have sorted it all out.
My mate Geoff has used the copper gaskets on his A7SS and they still leak.
well we will see as just getting some from TT John who said ........
I have copper rocker box gaskets, they are very good and I have not had any complaint yet about them.
Over the years i have tried most market sealants, the only one that is 100%effective is a hybred between silicone and resin, its crystal clear , it is the only one that is 100% petrol and oil proof. its brand name is soudal fix all. it never dries hard, it stays flexible.
Hi,
Th A10 rocker box always seems to be the weak spot for a leak or weep. As has already been mentioned it is essential to get the rather narrow mating surfaces completely flat. With an iron head probably just the rocker box needs to be done as it is unlikely to be the head. As part of this process ever so slightly countersink the stud holes to remove and burrs although this will happen during the 'dressing' on plate glass. Whilst doing this make sure that you are applying even pressure and not slightly rocking as you move the rocker box on the abrasive surface. Better to use very slight pressure and take a bit longer than to rush the job. Obviously check with a straightedge across from many angles to ensure flatness right across the surfaces. I always use Blue Hylomar. There is an aero grade if you can find it which is supposed to be better. Tighten everything evenly.
Another thing to consider is pressure in the crankcase. The timed breather can be defective if the cork washer is not doing its job. There are various thicknesses of these and it is essential to use as thick a one as possible. You may think that you will never get the case on but the cork needs to be compressed to do its job. A bit of oil from the breather will also be present in this scenario. Also, if bores/rings are not in good condition there will be a possibility of crank case pressure. This will inevitably find the line of least resistance to escape and that could well be the poor joint surfaces of the rocker box.
I have always found that it the front left that tends to leak more than other parts. It is likely that it gets a bit hotter near to the exhaust valves and using siamese pipes could add to this as the curve of the left hand pipe shields the head a bit so perhaps making it a bit hotter still.

Hi. Ive been following this mainly from the point of view of the oil leak situation. The last time I had an A7SS was about 1969/70 so my knowledge leaves a bit to be desired. I dug out an old manual and had a read.
My thoughts.?? are that an oil leak there is quite unsurprising given the fact the rocker cover is being pushed upward twice with every rev from the push rods and twic(less so) by the vale springs. As soon as the push rod takes up the valve clearance an upward moment occurs. I know the upward moment is generally dissipated but an upward pressure still exists. With changes in temperature and vibration and any gasket deficiences, very slight gasket damage can soon accur. We know oil doesn't need very much space to start a seepage.
As Said these are just my thoughts and from my standpoint, impossible to quantify.

Hi ...well the copper Gaskets turned up yesterday so when i get a chance I will get around to Trying them, oh TTJohn said they are soft copper and No need to anneal them.....I will look closer when I get time to put them on :-\ ;D
Thanks TTJohn ...we will see........ oh I have taken on board about the things to try like making sure the rocker Box matting Suffice is flat..I have already gone and done that but wont hurt to make sure again..as well as using Three bond..which is like Yamaha bond etc ;D
Hi Well an update on my oil leaks.
put the copper gaskets on and used three bond left for a day and then went out for a 20 mile run...Guess what ?
All oil all over the head so No they did not work.....Not to say its the gaskets at all but did Not work for me, so all I can say is I have taken it right down to the Barrels and am going to have the rocker box skimmed and the head face for the rocker box as I have had enough as this is the 5 time I have taken the rocker box off to TRY and fix the leaking head,
Cheers Mo
I sympathise with you sealing the rocker box. While you have it off check that it is not cracked. I think the long collets were used on the A65s. You haven't got long collets with the short collet holder? Have you.
Hi
No they are the right collet holder.....
Mo
Sorry to hear you still have a problem with the oil leak, I also had one which I thought was coming from the rocker box but it was traced to the studs that hold the box down, the oil was traveling down the threads of the studs, consequently as the bike was in motion, traveling along it, was traveling up onto the head.
This may not be the case in your problem but check everything, it's always good by checking other possible leaks that are not obvious.
Regards John
Hi,
Try this, works for me everytime:

Best wishes...
Thanks everyone for you advice,
I am off tomorrow to a local Engineering firm to see if I can get the rocker box face and the cylinder head rocker face skimmed and then see how we go........
Hi
an update on the head....picked it up today and fell over of how much ............ it cost £205 and they said it was way out of flat so when it go`s on this time I hope it all done and wont leak :P
Mind you they took out the guides skimmed the Rocker face put the guides back in re faced the valves cut the seats and lapped the valves back in so ok ...saved me a job ha...... but would have been good to ask me first ha as I could have done all that myself....... ::)
