Title: 1970 A65T US Export Side Covers
Post by: watts on 25 Aug, 2022, 09:54
Would the side covers been Steel or Fibreglass?

I have a set of twin carbs covers one on a the moment, but I am looking for some single carb ones.  I lost one the other day, poor fitting Oddies I guess.

I am a little confuse as to which length Oddies to use looking in the parts catalouge, I'm confused.

It is either

4 x 68-9223 (short 7/8")
or
3 x 68-9223 and 1 x 68-9287 (long 1 1/4")

and 5 or 6 68-9226 or/and 4 x 68-9227 Oddie rubber washers.

Why the difference?

Thank you

As far as I am aware, the side covers have always been made of fibre glass.

I believe you normally need 3 short and 1 long Oddie stud but it will depend, to some extent, on how well the fibre glass panels have been made and how accurately the front bracket has been fitted to the bike.

My understanding is that the 3 x short studs need 3 x long rubber washers 68-9226 but the short one needs 2 x making 5 in total. Essentially these long washers are needed to keep the studs attached to the panel when they are removed.

In addition, each stud needs a short rubber washer, 68-227, to take up the gap between the long washer and the Oddie socket or clip.

I believe the 1970 parts book may simply be recognising that some bikes may only need to use 4 x short Oddie studs in which case you will need 6 x long rubber washers rather than 5.

Hi,

I have a late '69 Thunderbolt with steel side covers.
