Title: Paint code
Post by: tige on 22 Aug, 2022, 21:52
I plan to put my 1964 A65 star back to original BSA colours, i have no colour specified on the old green log book, I do however like the red, So my question is has any one got the RAL code for it.
Many thanks steve.

If you look at the RS Paint web site, you will see what colours were used at the time. As far as I can see, the 1964 A65 Star came coloured blue! However, the colour used on the A65L of that year was Flamboyant Red Candy which was the colour I painted my A65. The main challenge with this type of paint is that it requires a metallic basecoat, followed by several coats of the red (more of a lacquer), followed by a clear coat to finish.

The alternative is to use the older red colours used by BSA such as Devon Red or Royal Red which you can again find sold by RS Paints. Devon Red is basically maroon whereas Royal Red is crimson. If you wanted to go down this route, there are RAL codes that could be dug out for both. As with the Candy paint, these also ideally need to be finished with a clear coat.

According to the 1964 catalogue the A65 Star USA model came in candy apple red and the UK model came in metallic dark blue with black as an alternative.

The factory despatch book entries usually give the original colours for UK supplied models.
