Title: B33 tyre profiles
Post by: bruce.craig on 21 Aug, 2022, 16:01
For many months I have been sourcing parts to rebuild my 1952 B33 Plunger and with alot of help from alot of people in various parts of the world I am very soon in a position to start a complete rebuild of the rear and front hubs and suspension, which is only the start.

The reason for this post is to ask for your help, recommendations, suggestions for the rear and front tyre profiles for a B33 ?

The existing tyres which are unuseable are 19" x 3.50 on the rear and 19" x 3.25 on the front.

I would be interested in any experiences you could share.

Cheers for your help.
Bruce

I've recently put new tyres on my 1954 plunger M33. They are Dunlop K70s; a 3.25 19 on the front and a 3.50 19 on the back. The ancient tyres I replaced were the same size, but the back one had a square profile. The new ones both have a round profile.

The bike handled well on the old tyres. The handling is just as good but lighter on the new ones.

I have had Dunlop K70s on the rear of my A7 and B33 bikes. I have found that the center groove wears down prematurely on the K70s. On the A7 the groove is almost gone after 3300 miles. On the B33 there is still some life left but not much after 4000 miles.

I have just purchased an Avon Safety Mileage MKII for the A7 to see if it lasts longer. The Avon tire does not have a center groove.

Does anyone have any experience with wear on the Dunlop or Avon tires?

Hi,

I have used Avon RoadRiders for many years and they last quite well. In the past I found that the SM MKII tends to wear a bit flat.  The RoadRiders wear more evenly across the profile and give good road holding and cornering.

Dave.

Either Dunlop or Avon, they both grip far better with the modern rubber compounds now used. My own preference is for Avons.
You might also consider Heidenau : https://www.heidenautires.com/tires/motorcycle/vintage/ (https://www.heidenautires.com/tires/motorcycle/vintage/)

I have a Mitas rear tyre on my Shooting Star which seem to be very good.

Avon Road Riders on both my bikes - swear by them!
