Post by: DaveH on 17 Aug, 2022, 14:09
Hi. I'm looking for a standard rear subframe for a 1961 B40 if anyone can help?

Regards,  Dave.

Out of interest, why do you need a B40 sub-frame?

HI Spaceman. I have just applied for a dating certificate to obtain an age related plate for my B40 in green lane trim. It transpires that at some point in its 61years the shock absorber mounts have been moved to accommodate longer shockers similar to a B25 so my application has not been accepted.
So my options are-
1. Obtain a B40 subframe
2. Obtain a C15 subframe (identical but would need the left hand mount moving outboard slightly to clear the chain). Thanks to RR vol 2
3. Fabricate new mounts for my original subframe.

So thought i would ask on the forum in the hope someone had a B40 or C15 subframe at the back of the shed.

Regards,   Dave.

I may be able to help with a C15 sub-frame or be able to cut out the rear shock mounts from it so they can be welded back on to your B40 sub-frame. I'll have a look at what I've got after I've had my lunch.

In the meantime, I'd be interested to know how your B40 sub-frame has been modified since, on both the B40 and B25 frame, the shock absorber mounts are located in the join between the top tube and the forward pointing tube underneath it. I'm finding it hard to imagine how your B40 sub-frame has been modified.

Hi,

Will the C15 subframe not fit a B40?

Dave.

Hi. Mine look like this. If you have a standard subframe you will see the difference.
Thanks for looking. Hope you can help.

Hi Dave.

First attempt at finding sub-frame wasn't successful although I found the frame itself!

As an alternative, it looks as though you could, in principle, cut out what you have and then weld in a plain section of bracket above to lower them to where they should be assuming you can get access to a welder. I'll post a sketch of what the complete bracket should look like so you consider the feasibility of doing this mod. The biggest challenge in making these brackets is shaping the curved dual bracket either side of the shock absorber mounting bolt which you already have and so fabrication of the rest should be relatively straightforward?.

Hi Spaceman.

Thanks for taking the time to help, it is much appreciated. If I don't have any success in finding a replacement over the weekend I will follow your suggestion & move the mounts to the correct position. I can now make some mounting plates following your dimensions.

Thanks again,  Dave
