Title: A65 piston rings
Post by: GlennA65 on 02 Aug, 2022, 13:32
Hi Folks, The rebuild of the old Lightning continues.... at a glacial pace.
I got some JP pistons and had the barrels rebored to suit. I'm just getting to fit them and I read in these pages that most people think the pistons are ok but the rings are rubbish!
As another black hole for my money opens up I'm thinking I might buy some better rings. I really don't want to rip it all apart again later. I've seen some GPM rings which appear to be made by AE Hepworth in the UK. Has anyone had any experience of these? Or else does anyone have any other suggestions/recommendations?
Many Thanks Glenn

Hi,

Goetze rings were recommended to me by an engineer and they do seem to be good quality,

Dave.

I'm now fitting Ed V's pistons into my A65's. Because of the sloped crown the 'burn' is mutch improved and my OIF A65 which used to pink terribly no longer does.  Also they use modern thin rings which are an improvement too. The ones pictured are for my current 1970 A65 Firebird project.

Thanks Dave. Yes I chucked the Hepolites out of my Triumph and put Goetze in and they are brilliant. Struggling to find them for the A65 though. Will keep looking.

Wow! they look amazing. Thanks for this, that's really interesting. I'll stick with the JP's though as I already have them and grimace as I chuck the rings that came with them. Next time though...
Cheers Glenn

Hi,

Have you had a look at what SRM are selling?  As they build engines and have their products used in racing I would think that what they sell will be of good quality.

Dave.

Hi, thanks for this. Yes. they sell the Hepworths I mentioned at the top. Like you I thought they would be the best available but you never know. Just wondered what other people thought.

Thanks Glenn
