Hi ,I am new to the forum this being my first post. I have recently purchased a 1964 A50 and have a 88sa ignition switch fitted as standard but would like to replace it with a Lucas 35351 switch but I am confused as to which way to wire it. Thanks Richard
First question: why are you replacing the original ignition switch with a different type?
I am sure you can make the change but you would probably have to loose the emergency start position on the switch - the original switch used 5 separate terminals but the Lucas 35351 only has 4 terminals and something therefore might have to be lost!
If you are determined to make the change, I am sure I can work out the connections for the new switch for you.
In electrical terms, the original switch was multi-pole because it had to carry out 3 separate switching operations. In contrast, the proposed 88sa ignition switch replacement is a single-pole, multi-throw switch and therefore cannot perform all the functions of the original switch.
To be able to use the new switch, you would need to abandon the emergency start function. To eliminate this, you would need to discard the BW from Pin 15 that goes to the coils. You would also have to join together the green/yellow and black wires that presently go to Pins 17 and 18, respectively. These allow the third pair of alternator coils to be switch by the lightning switch when the headlight is turned on.
All that remains is to connect the brown/white wire that presently goes to Pin 12a to Pin 1 of the new switch and to connect the white wire that presently goes to Pin 13 to Pin 2 of the new switch. When you turn the new switch to IGN, it will then simply connect power from the brown/white wire from the ammeter to the coils via the white wire.
Hi Spaceman ,thanks for your reply. The only reason i am changing the original switch is because the previous owner had butchered the barrel and previous experiences of my C15 with same switch i got fed up of the key keep failing out. The bike came with the new Lucas switch so i thought i would use it.
I had already figured out pin 1 was B/W feed and pin 2 White would make switch work but was unsure
of remaining wires. Thanks for your help.
