Title: Newbie requests advice on oil change
Post by: Barnsey on 16 Jul, 2022, 14:06
Hi All,

Having repaired my engine I am oiling up.  I've never owned a brit bike before so sorry if this is basic stuff.

1/  Do I need to prime the oil pump on a dry sump engine and how?  A friend suggests removing the spark plug and just kicking it over until the oil flows back to the tank. 'At least a hundred kicks' he said.
Someone else suggested squirting oil directly into the crank case.

2/  How do I find neutral on a brit bike?  I keep feeling around with the gear lever  but the back wheel just keeps on turning.

  Thanks in advance,

     Ian

It's always a good idea to squirt a bit of oil down the spark plug hole and kick over the engine a few times to coat the cylinder with a bit of oil. Normally, you don't need to prime the oil pump because it operates via gears and oil will initially flow into it under gravity from the oil tank. However, if you don't see oil returning into the top of the oil tank after 30 s after starting the engine, its best to stop it and investigate what's going on.

Normally, you have to apply a small amount of movement to the gear lever to find neutral (half the normal movement) but if you have a lot of clutch drag then finding neutral may be difficult with the engine running. If the engine is not running, neutral should be easy to select.

OK, Thanks for all of that!

I am relieved to see that you say "On starting the engine" 'cos I have kicked it over around 50 times and not seen the oil squirt back to tank yet.

dont worry about not instantly seeing oil return. the B40 recently rebuilt took ages, I even took the pipes off a couple of times, then there was no oil coming from the rocker feed. what to do????
as mentioned it does work through gears, make sure the pipes are on the correct side by removing the pipe and squirt some oil in the pipes it will either go in or come out, this will show you which is which. If you look at RR engine book he does explain that the feed pipes were swapped around so depending on what year engine you have....
I finished the wiring connections, oil and fuel, gave up on the old points and fitted electronic ignition, now it starts and runs I get a good oil feed returning and coming out of the rocker feed as well. Had it not returned , then obviously I would not have run until sorted.
