There really shouldn't be oil dripping from the cable, oil can wind it's way up the cable and into the speedo head and stop it working. It would seem that the bush in the speedo drive is worn and allowing gearbox oil to leak out onto the cable.

J&j cables can make one to your spec.

A very common and annoying leak.

The later pre unit boxes had an O ring added to the speedo driven gear, see the parts bulletin below. The frame numbers on the bulletin are about November 1961 so the RGS would have the O ring so worth checking its condition, they are quite fragile but replacement may help.

The photo shows a driven gear with the O ring.

The original Smiths cables seem to have a more substantial and more circular crimp than most current production which seem to have a hexagonal crimp which is more prone to drippng. Original Smiths top one in the photo.

Thanks everyone for the responses and advice.

I have ordered a cable from drag n fly £25

It's the 46 and 3/4 " outer cable length one

Have a lovely and safe summers riding

Try at every opportunity to get out as before we know it we will be regretting the days we could have - but didn't

Best

I had the same problem, oil leak which was dripping from the cable, i followed the advise about the o ring on the gear drive shaft, replace it and cured the problem. This forum is a wealth of information.
