Title: Rear Wheel Removal
Post by: Joho on 18 Jun, 2022, 17:17
I got a rear puncture recently in my '65 A50 and found it really difficult to remove the wheel at the roadside. Height was the issue and I needed to really tilt the bike over to get the wheel clear of the mudguard which was difficult on my own. Does anybody have any tips for doing this easily at the roadside or at home come to that? The spindle is split into 2 sections with the drive side having a short stub retained in the hub bearing. Had a spare tube so got home ok but just a bit hacked off that it took so long. Thanks.

In the good old days, BSA provided a hinge in the rear mudguard to allow you to remove the rear wheel easily but not on the A50. At home, at least, you can put planks of wood under the centre stand to raise it up sufficiently but I think you have to improvise out on the road.

Planks under centre stand at home. AA breakdown service when out on the road!
