Hi all, another simple question from a struggling amateur! Just about to fit new head stud and bolt set from SRM and got to wondering. Its not mentioned on their guide notes but would it be good practice to apply stud lock? If only for peace of mind! Any thoughts gratefully recieved. Thanks. Dave
I don't think it is necessary and is certainly not indicated in the Haynes Manual. In principle, thread lock would not do any harm although it would make taking the head off again or checking the tightness of the bolts/studs much more difficult at a later date.
Hi,
I would not use thread lock on the bolts and studs on the head unless specified. The presence of anything in the threads can cause inaccurate torque. Very clean threads and dry is probably best. Anything that could lubricate the thread such as thread lock before it sets, means that the bolt ends up tighter than it needs to be. Likewise if the thread is not clean then the bolt will end up not tight enough. This also applies to big end bolts that are fitted with dry threads unless specified by the manufacturer.
Again these are designed to stretch under a given torque setting which can be compromised by a dirty thread or one which has been lubricated when not specified.
Dave.
Thank you both tor your replies. Received and understood. Dave
