Hi I've got this a65 1970 engine and my kickstart is very stiff , so I replaced the kickstart shaft and the new one does the same , I've milled the timing cover where the shaft shits against and it still stiff, not sure if my return spring is not compressed enough I only turned it to the first flat as I assumed it wouldn't go around to the next flat
So any idea's
Hi Spike,
I only turn the spring to the first flat and the kickstart does sometimes not fully return especially if allowed to come back slowly. I only do one flat as I can do it by hand but going to a second flat is probably how it is meant to be and I did do this when a previous spring was getting a bit weak. Going to the second flat will almost certainly solve your problem.
There is an earlier thread about this and there is an idea for an ingenious tool for helping to turn the the plate and spring to the second flat.

I'll try and make a tool I think
:) :) :) :)
Before you go to that trouble try the other method.
Put the washer on so the "tang" is at the forard position. Now get the right size jubilee clip push it along the shaft until it is tight up against the washer make clip really tight.
Set the spring in place.
Get a piece of strong cord, with no knots in it, hook it onto the obvious place on the spring.
Pass the cord under the shaft and pull it round and up into position and put spring hook over the tang of the washer.
Pull the cord free
Remove the jubilee clip..
Job jobbed 10 minutes. in conjunction withis method try : -prayer and swear.
