Title: A10 tank question
Post by: MJM_58SR on 26 Apr, 2022, 17:05
Hello all
If anyone has an original tank for the 1958 super rocket would you be kind enough to post a side photo of it please. I'm trying to work out if the knee pad overlapped the gold line at the bottom of the tank and how much of a width of paint is along the bottom edge.
Any help would be appreciated as it's ready for painting
Thanks

This 1958 Super Rocket brochure gives the basic design for the chrome panel assuming you have got the same shaped tank.

Thanks
Yes it is
The problem is that the brochures all show the bottom of the pad in line with the edge of the chrome, in reality the pad sits quite low and it's impossible to get the paint and line below the pad and the pad to sit fully in the chromed area.
I think I shall have to adopt the what looks right approach!

If it is any help, the original tank made by BSA had the pad above the line. If the tank comes from India they fit the holes for the pad lower so that the pad lines up to the bottom of the tank. I have both in my garage.

Hi idie
Mine is the original tank stamped 1957, I've got a NOS LH pad which doesn't leave much / any room for having the line and paint below.

That's interesting, maybe the Indians had it right then.

I've painted a number of chrome panel BSA tank and, although I've taken note of what tanks originally looked like, I've tended to go with what looks right to my eyes.  At the end of the day, I would have thought that, when looking from the side, you need to be able to see the gold line as a minimum on the lower edge of the chrome panel which will set the limit in terms of how far you can push it?

Hi,
Interestingly the A10's built before 1958 have the knee pads lower than the 1958-on models.

Best wishes...
