Title: C15 Timing Pinion nut
Post by: Barnsey on 16 Apr, 2022, 11:11
A daft beginner's question I know, but I'll ask it anyway,

I am reassembling my engine having fitted a new kickstart shaft.

I have just tightened up the timing pinion gear nut to the required 55ftlbs with some help from my wife, sitting on the luggage rack to keep the back wheel from turning.

Having done this the nut turns when I turn the engine over via the back wheel.  I take it that is correct?
Daft I know, but I guessed that the nut would tighten up solid and the pinion would spin on the shaft. Of course, having worked to get to this point, I don't want to take it all apart again to check how it works.

  regards,

   Ian

The timing side pinion on the inside of the inner timing cover is keyed to the camshaft via a Woodruff key and is what rotates the camshaft at half the engine speed. The nut is on the end of the camshaft and therefore has to rotate with the engine. So, as long as you have put a lock washer under the camshaft nut, everything sounds fine :)
