Hi
Does anyone know if you can fit an early gearbox to a 1970 a65, is there a difference except the gear selector

As far as I can see from the parts books, many of the internal gearbox components are the same although the bearing plate (outer cover) is different. Not sure what the differences in the bearing plate are? The gear selectors are different because of the way the end stops for it were provided which mainly affected the inner timing cover design.

Hi,

The last selector plates were thicker and did not have the strengthening strap and the later cases are not machined to give clearance for it.  A bit of work with a Dremel will resolve this.  Also, this thicker plate will not fit in the earlier cover/bearing housing as the slot is not wide enough.  Modification is most certainly possible but would have to be very accurate to ensure proper operation.

Dave.

I would avoid using any parts or the complete cluster from a pre 1966 season machine, there were a number of changes to improve strength and reliability and the parts do not always mix and match. Some of the changes are apparent in the factory parts service bulletins which can be found in the members area of the BSAOC and some are obvious in the parts books.
