Hi all
Just wanted to get a few ideas to help me out please.
I've rebuilt my A10 super rocket and have been trying to get it started but no joy as yet!
Mag has been rebuilt, engine rebuilt.
checked that the RH piston is TDC then rotated engine back to 3/8 BTDC. Used a mag timing box I got from the magneto guys to get the correct opening point on the magneto. It's had a new carb 930 Amal which replaced like for like the one that was on but this one is the aluminium body type.
All I've had out of it is a few very loud bangs which sound like a gun going off!
The leads are the correct way round, the rockers rock with the RH piston TDC. The valve timing marks were lined up. The heel of the points is at the bottom of the mag, points are at top. Lever was set to full advance when setting timing.
Any ideas please?
Thank you
Hi,
Did you go back beyond 3/8" then forward again to take up the play?
Could have created an error if you didn't.
Regards, Alan
Hi,
How did you turn the engine? It is probably best to use the back wheel with the engine in gear and make sure that the piston is coming up the bore to eliminate slack as mentioned. This also avoids the remote possibility of timing the engine after TDC (I know but don't ask) as the symptoms you describe would result from this.
Dave.
Thanks Alan and Dave
I'll have a fresh look at it tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the replies.
Morning
Thanks for the replies yesterday, thought I should report back.
Well I was sure I had timed it correctly but when I took the pickups off the mag it was 180 out, bit of rectification work and fired 2nd kick! So a clanger dropped there.
I've now got an oil leak from the back of the pump, a new SRM one, will see what happens....

My oil leak is from the back of the pump.
FTFY ;)
Yes it did fix it so really happy now! Im just trying to work out of the oil pump itself sits in oil or should it be dry? It looks like it will have oil in there but as I'm on a steep learning curve i though I'd get some advice?
Thanks, not far off from m actually riding it again!
Hi,
The oil gets everywhere when running and there always seems to be bit in case when taken off.
Dave.
Thanks Dave
The oil is returning to the tank ok and a constant flow. I've took the plug out of the sump and probably less than a quarter of a pint drained out. I'm probably just being windy but I've spent a lot of time (and money) on it so want to make sure it's ok.
Photo shows after been running maybe less than a minute.

Hi,
I would think that you have followed the SRM instructions to the letter so all should be well. The SRM gasket and the correct torque on the screws are important.
As the pump pushes the oil through the timing side bush some will come towards the timing case so what you are seeing is probably this. Although it cannot be seen, I would say that the centrifugal affect of the crank will draw more of this oil through the big ends as engine speed increases.
Dave.
Hi Dave
Yes I did follow them properly. I'm thinking that the good flow back to the tank is an indication of all being well? But as I have said I am on a steep learning curve. I do have one concern with the inlet rockers not seeming to have as much as oil on as the exhaust so I need to check that out, I'm just doing random checking to make sure all is as should be.
Thanks for the replies, it is appreciated
Regards
Martyn
Hi,
If you look at the rocker banjo oil feed screws you will see that the drilling for the exhaust is slightly larger than the inlet. This is so that the hotter running exhaust side gets enough oil, so perhaps just check the pipes are clear.
I would think that with the SRM pump the oil return to the tank will eventually become less of a flow as the pump scavenges the oil out of the sump. I think the standard pump a return capacity that is twice the feed and the SRM one is probably the same.
Dave.
Thanks Dave
It's got the TD rocker feed on and looking at the banjos they are the same size holes. I'm going to recheck that the path for the oil is clear.
Martyn
Hi Martyn,
The actual screws have different size holes whilst the banjos are the same. I have found an image online.
Dave.
The banjo bolt with the larger hole is for the Gold Star exhaust rocker.
The one with the smaller hole is for the A7/A10 inlet and exhaust and Gold Star inlet.
Hi,
Interesting. Both A10s, a '59 Flash and a late SR, I had in the past had the larger hole fitted to the exhaust banjo and My wife's '51 Flash has the larger hole one fitted as well. Perhaps there was a spate of owners fitting them as it was considered a worthwhile mod??
Dave.
I think it is/was quite common.
