Title: Side panels securing
Post by: Dunc Milne on 31 Mar, 2022, 09:30
Hi are the oddie securing bolts all different lengths on a 1970 Royal star? Did see in one magazine someone modified there's to a bolt with a chrome nut on the outside. Looked ok but not original. Anyone got any suggestions on what's best and secure. Thanks

 :) :) :) :)

Over the years there have been several different lengths.

I now use 5/16th bolts with half nuts on the inside to fix them in place, then a thin rubber washer and wing nuts to hold the lanels in place.

All stainless. Non standard I know but very secure.

Hi,

Never had a problem with the Oddie clips but they can get worn and be less secure especially if the hole in the side panel gets a bit worn as well.  If changing the bit in the panel, it is probably worth changing the springy part as well.  If really worried it is may be worth trying to change to Dzeus clips.

Dave.

The 1970 A65 uses 1 x long Oddie stud (68-9287 x 1 3/8") and 3 or 4 x short Oddie studs (68-9223 x 1") according to the parts book.

The 3 +1 ones mentioned in the previous post work for me on my 1970 Royal Star. The main problem is the LH (Battery) cover is awkward due to the upper left hand (as you look at it) edge is very close to the frame and makes it awkward to line up.
A previous owner has trimmed some of this away in this area and it does make it easier (looks OK as well).

Hi,
Welded flanged nuts onto the brackets and use countersunk hex screw with countersunk washer.

Best wishes...
