Hi what colour should the front and rear hubs be on a A50 1970? Mine are hand painted in grey and look terrible. Also stainless or chrome wheels and spokes? Many thanks
The front hub should be silver and I believe the rear crinkle hub should be black. I tend to go for SS rims and spokes but the polish on the SS rims is sometimes not that impressive. If you want very shiny original rims then chrome is better and using SS spokes is a good compromise.
:) :) :)
Entirely personal.
The only spokes I've ever had break were stainless so I now go for chrome rims and galvanised spokes. The reason for them breaking----no idea but once is enough for me.
As for original hub colour--No idea. I either go for black or silver to suit colour scheme of bike.

Hi,
The A50 1962-65 hubs were silver sheen, 1966 onwards they were black.
I use either aluminum or stainless rims with stainless spokes, Devon rim company because they are close:

I think it is probably down to personal choice what hub colour you choose. However, the general rule seems to be that half width type hubs were painted black and full width were painted silver. Thus, the full width twin leading shoe front hub on a 1970 A50 would be silver and the rear crinkle hub would be black.
In terms of using SS spokes, the bike I use for green laning has SS spokes and I've never had a problem with them after 5 years of solid use. There was anecdotal evidence of problems with off road use but that was with a much heavier modern bike and may well have been down to a quality issue. For road use, I don't think there are any concerns over the use of SS spokes.
Thank you all for answering my questions. It's much appreciated.
