Title: B44 Victor gearbox return spring installation
Post by: Millerboy on 14 Mar, 2022, 15:06
Hi Everyone.

Rebuilding my '70 Victor Special. The gearbox had both the kickstart and gear lever/selector spring broken so I have sourced new springs. Looking at various (both google sourced and works manual) pictures of the way the selector spring is fitted I can't seem to get the spring in place. I've tried all morning both with all parts in situe and as the manual says fitting onto the selector first then installing into the case and I can't bend it enough to go over the pins or it 'pings' across the workshop. Am I doing something wrong or is there a technique to installing this spring? If the photo attachment comes through this is a google image of the correct installation

I assume the problem you are having is getting the spring on to the gear quadrant?

I've just taken the spring off a quadrant I had laying around and it is difficult to to re-insert the spring by hand. What I ended up doing was to insert the end of a bull nosed mole grip into the spring where it fits over the quadrant centre pin and then forced the grip to the open end of the spring by pushing down on a bench. By then twisting the mole grip I forced open the middle part of the spring enough to slip it over the quadrant centre pin. Once this was done it was a simple matter to lever the open ends of the spring over the other quadrant pin.
