Hello once again.
I am trying to replace the throttle cable on my BSA as the end o the outer was fraying. Measuring the existing one the outer is 36.5 inches and the inner is a smidge under 4 inches longer.
The adjusters were both near their maximum and I had a sneaky suspicion that the cable was a bit too long as I needed throttle to keep it idling.
I fitted a replacement (which also came with another adjuster in the middle for some reason?) but the inner is too short by 5mm as it holds the throttle slightly open even with all adjusters at their minimum. So, does anyone know how much longer the inner should be than the outer for this bike? Should there be an adjuster in the middle? This seems a weak point to me.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Ian
I see you are new to the game ! Control cable's can be a lot of fun .With throttle cables I always buy a do- it yourself kit and take the measurements from the old cable. More than likely you will have to make 'adjustments to a ready made one .Good luck .
Unfortunately, this problem happens a lot. If the inner is too short, it's possible in principle to reduce the outer cable length but you have to be careful how you do it to avoid damaging the inner. It should be possible to work out the required relative lengths from the old cable?
Hi Ian
I have a 1950 B33 which should be very similar to yours, depending on what changes have been made over the years to twistgrip and carb. I have no adjustment at the handlebars or at the carb, but the length is adjusted part way along as you mention. I believe that's how it would have been originally. Do you have enough cable length on the original to carefully remove the ferrule, cut off the damaged outer, replace the ferrule then cut the inner to length and resolder the nipple? Otherwise remove the ferrule from the new one, trim off 5+mm then replace the ferrule. (Carefully cut through the outer coils without damaging the inner, then unwind the surplus. Its a bit of a faff but not a big job.)
That's how I do mine.
Hi everyone.
Strangely there's some comfort to be had knowing I'm not alone! Yes, I should be able to modify the new cable to fit now that I know it's "normal".
Thanks all!
Ian
Many of the new manufactured replacement cables come with molded solder not brass nipples so melt away when heated so you may need to source a replacement brass nipple to complete the job.
Making your own cables will mean that they are always the correct fit for your bike.
Hi,
Surrey Cycles do a throttle cable kit with nipples included. An 'in cable' adjuster can be requested. So just the final length to adjust and one nipple to solder.
Dave.
