hi just joined the forum from brittany france, just bought an A10 iron head with hi comp pistons +20 thou and fresh rebore, basically a rolling chassis needs carb, rims, oil tank petrol tank and lots of TLC, i have a spare plunger frame oil tank too swap for an A10 swinging arm oil tank circa 1960. My other bikes are Triumph tiger hinckley 900 '94 and a BMW R1150R 2005.
Bonjour,
Welcome to BSA ownership and to the Forum. It looks like you have quite a bit of work to do and you will find a lot of help here. I have an oil tank that may be of use to you. Have a look in the 'for sale' section of the Forum. Page 2, item 15.
Dave.
thanks i will
how much for the blue oil tank?, postage to dorset sp8
Hi,
How about £35 plus postage? I will include the fittings that I have. Rather than mess about with transferring money I would like you to donate the money to a charity local to the delivery address.
Dave.
thats pretty kind , the delivery address will be too a mate who has a son that is special needs and he also has an A10, his son is in a sheltered facility in Dorset I will get the details thank you very much for your kindness. Will be in touch when its ready to be done.
Hi,
If you use the 'My Messages' facility to send the delivery details it will keep things a bit more private.
Dave.
Note that the iron head is not compatible with high comp pistons. High comp pistons generate too much heat. The iron head cannot dissipate the heat. Use either flat top pistons (about 7-1/4: 1 compression) or fit an aluminum head.
Greg
Hi,
8:1 comp. or a tad more should be fine with an iron head and you can run a 357 cam but I believe the valve gear needs to be changed to Road Rocket spec for the extra lift. I think the heat will more likely be an issue if the upper end of the performance is used for more than short bursts.
My wife's '51 Flash runs +0.080" 8:1 pistons giving about 680cc. With 357 cam with RR valves and 28mm concentric carb. it goes really well. No over heating has been experienced even after a bit of thrashing and climbing Alpine passes loaded with camping gear.
I would think that anything much over 8.5:1 comp. may be a bit much.
Dave.
yep agreed , i am looking for the right alloy head, first of all i had too check out the bottom end which is all rebuilt, cleaned the oil ways re oiled and now reassembled.
I'll agree with Dave. I have a 58 Golden flash with iron head and flat top pistons (about 7-1/4:1). My Road Rocket and Super Rocket have aluminum head with domed pistons (about 8.5:1). I was just cautioning against too high compression with iron head, because that's what I've read 1000 times (well maybe 998 times)

If you are going up to 8 to 1 make sure you have the thick flanged barrels. They can crack above the flange other wise.
Hi,
Ideally thick flange barrels and a large journal crank. The A10 I referred to above has thin flange barrel and small journal crank.
I think that as well as not going too high with the compression it is important to make sure that the nuts are kept tight to avoid any movement and therefore reduce the chance of cracking. The crank has had the end feed conversion and fitted with good quality big end shells. This engine has done a lot of miles.
Dave.
I am guessing my pistons are around 7.5:1 large journal crank all a fresh build , checked oilways etc blown out, somebody did a lot of work then just stopped putting it together, i am not looking at building a max performance motor as it will not be used often, only on sunny days etc , can't ignore my beemer she'll get jealous;0) So far i am painting bits, i think the tank is RGS Monza cap, it has surface rust but nothing bad apart from losing its chrome off the sides, so its going Black and getting superrocket/roadrocket artwork rather than transfers. I will post photos when i can work out how too make them small enough for the forum to accept! All round a fun project!
Send your photos to Paint, shrink them there and put on site.
