Title: Rocket Gold Star replica - frame type?
Post by: redmelons on 26 Jan, 2022, 22:13
I have a Rocket Gold Star replica, first registered in 1960. The engine is a DA10R which I think is ok for a Super Rocket, but the frame number according to the V5 starts GB33. That seems to match the stamping on the frame (bit hard to read due to paint). What type of frames were GB33 please?

From a 1960 B33 500cc single.

The right side frame tube should be kinked to accept the singles oil pump.

Thanks! Yes, the lower right frame tube is flattened and kinked. What is the difference between a B33 frame and an A10 frame?

The kink, the position and form of the head steady bracket and I think that the prop stand bracket is a bit further back than the twin frame. Maybe more minor differences but the twin engine should fit the single frame with the correct engine plates.

 :) :) :) :)

Back in the day I put my A7SS engine in a B31 frame whilst I had the A7 frame straightened.

Found this page which seems to sum it up.

https://www.classicbikeguide.com/from-the-archive-riding-life-bsa-rocket-gold-star/

"BSA's basic single-cylinder road bikes, the B31 and B33, have a chassis and gearbox that are very similar to a Gold Star.
There are plenty of rough B31s still about, ditto A10 engines. So a builder could combine two BSAs to create an RGS replica".

So it seems I have an RGS replica with a B33 frame, a Super Rocket engine and an AMAL concentric carburettor. Looking at clamp marks on the near side frame, it's probably been used with a sidecar.

How should this model be described for an insurer?

Tell the insurer that it is an RGS replica. That is listed in their database and you should get decent agreed value.
Mine was treated as that when I called Footman James to add it to my other bikes.
Post a picture, always good to see a nice BSA

Cheers. I'm currently with Hastings and thought it would be straightforward to just change my bike, but the only model they had in their database was A10 Golden Flash so I've left it as that until the insurance runs out. I'll try Carole Nash and Footman James at renewal.

Hi,

Nice looking bike.  The tank may need a bit more padding at the front to lift it slightly as there could be a danger of the tank chafing on the frame
I would say that your bike is more of a RGS lookalike rather than a replica which could make a difference to an insurer.  What does the registration document say it is?
The model name on that is probably the best one to stick to.

Dave.

Cheers, I hadn't noticed that!

It just says BSA 650cc. The engine is a DA10R (Super Rocket), the frame is GB33 (B33).

Hi,

I would stick to just 'BSA 650' if you can as that does not imply any modifications apart from cosmetic/aesthetic.  In my experience the difference between a basic 'Flash' and Super Rocket does not make much difference to insurers.  They seem to be more interested physical modifications and value for determining a premium.
