Title: New member 1st restoration project, ID this bike?
Post by: DT007S on 23 Jan, 2022, 00:33
Greetings!
I found this little gem online, appears to be untouched, and unwanted. Not sure of the year/model, and I can't find images that look like this one on the web. Wondering if I should save her, but I can't let her go to the crusher!!! I only have the pics so far and it is too far away for me to go look at it, no keys, don't know if it runs. I will have to buy it unseen and have it shipped. Any ID info would be helpful to get me started on saving this lost scooter. Is it a gem? Pls help. see pics and respond with what you think the year/model may be. Any leads on what model/year would be appreciated.
A little backstory:
I was a teen without guidance or direction, bought a chopped 1969 BSA Rocket for a couple hundred bucks, could not get it running, without guidance, gave it away.
This will be my 2nd restoration attempt trying to make it successful and share the experience. Thank you

BSA A65 LIGHTNING  probably about 1965 - 1969 there were a few different models .

Could be the Thunderbolt model .

Whoops too late .

Hi,

I would suggest a Thunderbolt because of the single carb.  It has the smaller export tank and looks pretty much standard and complete.
Save it! Save it!

Some thing I have just noticed is that the colour looks like it is not black but 'Moonscape Grey'.  This colour was used on 1969 Thunderbolts to commemorate the moon landing of that year.  If you do get this bike try to preserve the original colour as not that many would have been done and even less will have survived.
I have such a bike but is has been repainted once with a very good match for the original colour.  Non standard seat, exhaust and front brake.

Dave.

The timing side has the clutch wire attachment which I think came on 1970 models. My 1969 Lightning does not have it. Cheers

Hi,

I think the clutch arrangement changed in that year in that late '69 bikes were fitted '70 engines.  The one I have was registered on the 29th of December 1969.

 :) :) :) :)

Hiya.

Suggest that you post the frame and engine No here. That way you will get a more positive input. Please don't let it die a scrapyard death.

That might even be twin carb

A bike seeming very complete. Polish it up and running it would easily fetch 2000 pound sterling upwards. If you do not want it please PM me. Cheers
