Title: B31 handle bar limit
Post by: Drew on 18 Jan, 2022, 09:05
Hi all.
I think there is a problem in how the handle bars and surrounding parts and configured. The bike has a very limited lock-to-lock distance but this is not limited by what I believe is supposed too, but by the handle bars hitting the tank.
At the bottom of the headstock assembly there is what looks like a proper steering limit device, a sort of horseshoe that hits a stop. This only gets within a centimetre or so before the handle bars hit the tank. I believe this has always been the case under the previous (my dads) ownership but must be wrong. I definitely wouldn't feel safe riding it being so restrictive.
So, what could be wrong!? The bike was rebuilt many years ago from a VERY bad state so could well contain incorrect parts, can anyone spot anything obvious? It doesn't look like there is any adjustment that I could do to improve the situation.
See attached pictures.

Cheers all!

I would suggest that the handlebars are incorrect . I may be wrong but they dont seem to have the correct bend next to the yoke . Only photo I can find is not quite the same bike but the bars seem much steeper .

As has been said, the handlebars have the bend to far away from the mounting. Otherwise if the tank is not the original the brackets have been welded on to low so lifting the front of the tank slightly.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I have taken another couple of photos, see below. One is taken from the same angle as the one above and the bends on my handle bars do indeed appear less steep, hopefully this is the only issue and I can get a new set.
The second photo shows the gap between my tank and the brackets, I can only get the end of my finger in, do others have a similar gap?
There was a comment about the brackets being further away from the bends, they are but I think on my bike they actually seem to be closer together, so hopefully this isn't a problem.

Cheers!

An update and further question.
I bought some new handlebars with a large angle  and rise, this improved things but didn't cure it. I've since bought a handle bar riser which looks like it will do the trick, I just need to order some longer bolts.
So, my question is, what thread are the 4 bolts that hold the handle bars in place? I think they are 5/16 UNF ?

Cheers!
