Title: Carb cleaning
Post by: Mike Farmer on 02 Jan, 2022, 11:39
 :) :) :) :)

H.

This is really an extension to a previous post re carbs. I jokingly mentioned cleaning with Coka Cola.

I have a Concentric carb that is very seriously bunged up to the point I can't even push a darning needle into the crud. So when I can afford it I shall buy a bottle of CCola and lob the carb in for a couple of days/weeks whatever and give it a go.

I'll let you know the outcome. Nothing to lose as the carb is apparently cream crackered anyway.

Positive New Year to you all

I have heard of people un seizing pistons with coke, but when spilt it tends to leave a sticky residue

Yes its a typical sugar residue. I can live with that if it cleans my carb. We'll see

why not buy a bottle of redex carb cleaner. the red stuff. cleans and removes deposits after a good soak and only about 3 quid a bottle.

It's the acid in the coke that does the work. Diet Coke has still got a fair amount of acid in it. In fact I use cheap Diet Coke to clean out light rust in a petrol tank. You do have to leave it in for a few days as it's not as effective as Spirits of Salt which is hydrochloride acid and I wouldn't suggest this for a carb!

Thanks. When I can afford it I'll go down the Diet Coke line. The carb can sit in it for a few weeks as I aint in a rush for it.

I would probably change the coke after a few days and inspect the carb. If you buy Aldi or Lidl's cheap coke ( about 20p a bottle I think ) you can afford to sacrifice it after a few days.
Just to show how effective it is as an acid, if you put a childs milk tooth in a glass of cola, in a few days it will have completely dissolved.

I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. But as I want a new BSA I'm not sure I can afford the Coke as well.

Must say very interested in the new machine even tho I cant ride it anymore.

Mike, if you buy that new BSA I'll not only ride it for you but buy you a can of coke as well.

Now you don't see an offer like that every day!  ;D ;D ;D

Cheers,
Bernie

Bugger me! How can a simple country boy, like me, turn down an offer like that.

Seriously, the more I think of it, the more a likely proposition becomes. Can I afford it. Not a clue!!! I'll have a better idea when we have some idea of cost.

One of my thoughts: -The first ones will be manufactured in India??? and should reflect Indian prices. IF and when they are produced in UK the prices will probably(must) seriously increase for obvious reasons of salary difference etc.

All guessing games at the moment---but it depends how long it takes me to pay off my can of coke.

Finally saved the deposit for a bottle of coke(diet) so carb is submerged in it. Will leave it for a couple of weeks (or months) and let you know.

I dont think I'll get a rfund but I'll try.

As for the taste--no idea but if I pour enough rum into it should be OK. I suppose had I thought about it in time I should have soaked it in the rum. That way if it fails I can drown my sorrows.

Take care gents.

Hi,

Usually a straw is used to draw branded cola drinks in to the mouth but how about getting a 'sonic cleaner' affect by blowing down the straw to make bubbles and directing them towards the little drillings that could have air trapped in them stopping the affect of the magic liquid.
As an adult you can get away with this as you can justify it on the grounds of increased efficiency.  As a child you would never have got a way with this excuse so make the most of it.

Dave.

Watch out for hyperventilation.

After two weeks in the coke there is no change in the solidity of the gunge in the channels. It has turned the carb a funny brownish colour  and the Coke tastes like I imagine the bottom of a baby's pram might taste.

I'm going to put it in fresh Coke for another couple of weeks.

Hi all. Great big thankyou to Berniej. At his invitation I sent my carb to him to do the business. He has now kindly sorted it and returned it to me. Super Job so thanks again Bernie. Perhaps you would like to post the pic on here. Accolades.!!!!

My pleasure Mike  :)

I invested in a small blasting cabinet a while back which I now use for all my alloy and brass parts when restoring.
Glass grit to clean and glass bead to peen and sheen.

I glass bead all of my carbs. They come out looking like new. Just thoroughly wash them including all orifices.
