Having now hopefully sorted the tight motor, Im moving back to the primary assembly. Superglue didnt workremoving the spacer so I made some different feet for my bearing puller and its off.
Now,reading Ruperts book it says Alignment of chain teeth is important, well, mine looks out. Ive been in there with a depth mic today and Im roughly 3/16" out of line. the clutch basket is lapped and new rollers but is approx .375" from front face of teeth to case face, while the engine sprocket is .212". The engine sprocket spacer is the middle one available at 0.312" the others are +-.010. the oil seal witness is approx where it should be . Ive got nothing left over from strip down so?? where to go from here?
pushing either clutch or engine hubs inward will hit the back of the casing
if anyone has their primary open could they check please,
Rupert Ratio uses a 12" steel rule to check primary alignment, may be an easy way to double check alignment. It may be that the primary chain does not run parallel to the primary cover face.
Hi,
Pretty much the same as an A65. I check across the teeth of the clutch and engine sprocket with a steel rule. The spacer, sprocket and rotor need to be on the crank and tightened a bit to check the alignment. Shims fitted or not as required. It can be done with the chain on but the ruler needs to be against the plates rather than the rivets as they can be quite variable.
Dave.
I hadnt factored in the fact the face would be on an angle to the shafts but, realistically I suppose the height of the clutch basket means it could be machined at an angle, so a pointless excercise on my behalf
hope you all had a good xmas and a few days to play.
Ive machined up a dummy spacer for behind engine sprocket, not tightened up but clutch is lapped in and tight on shaft and cant get a feeler behind engine sprocket and the engine sprocket is still around 45 thou above clutch chainwheel.
picture of back of basket the centre is close to basket with new rollers.Short of taking gearbox back out and moving the shaft in. is .040"approx 1mm going to be a problem?
I could ease another .010 by buying the thinner option spacer in the new year.
Hi Chaz,
I would think that 40 thou is too much. I tried to get my A65 to zero but this proved quite difficult and I settled on about 8 thou. Considering that clutch is never without a bit of wobble and there would be a degree of self alignment within this wobble I considered this amount of misalignment to be acceptable.
So with the dulpex chain of the B40 rather than the triplex of the A65 I would settle for a bit more than 8 but not much if it can be achieved.
Dave.
thanks Dave, will try to get a new spacer, in the meantime , will turn up a stainless steel one 10 or possibly 20 thou thinner. dont want to do too small as BSA only gave the 10 thou option. any smaller and might rub the casing. As for the gearbox shaft, that was not touched on strip down, so clutch is presumably as left.
