Title: Engine cut out
Post by: spike123 on 16 Dec, 2021, 12:31
Hi guys
My a65 1967 has been rebuilt with a Boyer brandsen ign, my problem is last week it just cut out when riding, my lights worked but the indicator didn't, when I got back and started to investigate my new ammeter did not have continuity so I replaced it and the indicators worked and it fired up, I reeved it up and it cut out, I took the l/h side cover off and I got power back?. Today I rode it and it went good until I thrashed it and it cut out immediately, so I took the side panel off and nothing obvious, put the cover back on and it started, so completely baffled , the fuse  is good, the only  thing i can think of is the Boyer may hay some sort of rev limiter on it or possibly the fuel taps can't handle can't handle the flow ? Any ideas

Hi Spike,

What type of fuse holder have you got fitted?  The usual one with the glass festoon type of fuse can be susceptible to vibration.  Check the spring is strong enough to give a good connection.  Even the more modern spade type can have a hairline fracture that could  cause the problem you describe when there is vibration.  Try replacing the fuse.

Dave.

 :) :) :) :)

If this persists may I suggest that you go to the Boyer website and check out their FAQs. If necessary they have always been very helpful to me in the past if I had a problem.

Hi
The fuse seems to be intact (glass type), thought it might be the vent in fuel cap but that's ok, so the only thing I can think is the ignition side, the Boyer and coils are new so might try what mike suggested

I have Boyer ignition on my A50. I went through a period when it was an absolute pig to start. I checked everything several times and eventually found a poor crimped connection: it was duly soldered. Your problem does sound as though you might have electrical gremlins and could be something simple like a cable broken internally. With a meter and checking everything bit by bit, hopefully you'll find the problem.
Did you notice whether there was any fuel in the float chamber when it cut out? What I've noticed is that I sometimes get a white jelly deposit in the carb, (probably from the alcohol) which causes a partial blockage noticeable  when the engine's working hard.

Hi, as I don't know where you are with this I thought of something worth trying.

If it were me, I would make a final check to ensure that I've got it all wired as per. Once satisfied with that, disconnect the input from the ignition to the spark unit and pass a wire direct from the battery.

If it then runs OK its not ignition. If it's still the same then you at least know where to start serious investigation. If you've already cured it----good.

Thanks for you input guys, I shortened the input cable to the ign box and didn't seem to have a problem so far, I also blew the vent hole from the tank cap
