my alternative b31 had an annoying engine oil weep [drips underneath the gearbox ] after a ride and cured it by buying new shiny oil pipes of groanbay.
now the same weep is back after a month. i suspect the crimping and oil pipe is poorly made. anyone else have issues? made in india?
Make sure that it isn't coming from behind the unions screwed into the engine the fibre washers can leak.
thanks for suggestion but its further up the pipes. i ve tightened the oil tank fittings to maximum granch. i need to pin point where its leaking when i have some daylight.
Ring sell a UV dye which is excellent for leak tracing.
it seems to be a weep at the oiltank retutn pipe thread . the connection is as tight as i dare go.
dye for oil leaks sounds a good idea i will look into that.
If it is a swinging arm bike the oil could be coming from the rocker feed banjo joint- if the fibre washers either side of it are not quite thick enough the retaining nut, even if fully tightened, may not compress the washers enough to seal. If this is the case you will be able to rotate the banjo slightly,
The photo explains - the nut is fully tightened - the washer needs to be thick enough to fill the gap between nut and banjo. If not there is an annoying leak.
Also make sure the whole assembly allows the oil pipe union to fully screw onto the tank connection.
thanks for both suggestions julian. i have decided to remove the oil tank of and have a good look and check the threads. its to awkward to see clearly when on the bike. this job is added to a long list of ailments with this b31 . it wouldnt restart yesterday and i suspect the condensor as there is a massive power drain when ignition switched on. however searching the internet but very little info on alt models.
You will get a power drain if you switch on the ignition with the points closed. Current will flow through the coil and to earth.
12 volt battery but only 6.5 volts at the coil when ignition on ,so it looks like i need a new battery.
Dunno how much you know about electricity, but if you also have the same 6.5 volts at the battery or fractionally more, then yes, it's the battery. If there's 12 volts or so across the battery with the ignition off, which drops to about 6.5 volts with the ignition on, again it's the battery.
If there's 6.5 volts at the coil with the ignition on and 12 at the battery, there's at least one very bad connection somewhere between the battery and the feed side of the coil.
These are all measured with the points closed.
