Working on a B40 ss90. Need to fit a new head gasket. Have ordered a new lipped type but the hole location/sizes seem to be off. After "easing" the holes the main cylinder hold doesn't appear big enough to drop down over the cylinder lip.
Has anyone else had this problem?
just checked the old barrel, solid copper gasket dropped straight on, the new barrel is fitted with a new one from a kit from Wassell , that went on without any problem.
were you supplied with a B40 or C15, any packing numbers? not an impossibility for suppliers to mix parts
is the barrel fitted with a flanged, top hat style or a straight liner?
If you had to "ease" the stud holes to get it to fit, then I would suspect that you have the wrong gasket. I've measured a new gasket that I've got and the bore size is 3.400".
I have had a 4 stud and 6 stud gasket supplied by 2 different suppliers. Neither of them fitted properly, I would say both manufactured by the same company. I have a genuine NOS MOD gasket on its way , fingers crossed.
I think I must spend at least 10% of my working time discussing/returning shoddy parts. Only wish j could back charge the suppliers.
I must have been quite lucky when I built my SS90 as i only had a couple of parts issues, the worst being 0.625"-20 BSC nuts which were all tight, in the end I bought a tap to rework them. Admittedly a lot of the NOS parts that came with the basket case that I bought were sourced by the previous owner in the 1990's, so way before the current stock of sometimes dubious pattern parts.
Good luck with your build. Cheers Colin.
