Title: BSA B33
Post by: Barriball on 29 Nov, 2021, 20:08
Hi.

Does anyone know if there is a conversion to electric start for a B33. I believe there is now for an A10?

Yes Pearson the Gold Star specialist does one for the GoldStar that fits. The kit has all you need for the conversion. The smallest engine sprocket is a 21 tooth. When I fitted the kit to my B33 I changed the gearbox sprocket to an 18 tooth from a 19 to get the gearing closer to standard. I did a write up  for mine in the Star 2017.

Hi.

Thanks for that.

Would you have a copy of your write up please? Did and does it all work well?

It works very well I fitted mine in 2016 it is still working fine. If you want to read my write up go into the members section. Under the Star mag bring up January and February 2017. I have found his phone number it is 07930109694. His site comes up as Gold Star parts. The kit is not cheap, but your knee will love you for it.

I have fitted one to my M33 ridged, alright if you are not a rivet counter.  A lot of work though.

Hi Idie
I assume your rigid M33 had a steel primary case to start with. Did the conversion to alloy involve any further modifications? What about the footrest?  Or did the M33 start off with an alloy primary?

cheers
Pete

It has taken a lot of work. Even with the kit you need to make a new mounting for the motor Make a new nearside footrest mount. The alloy chain case needed a little work to fit. I found that fitting a 4 spring clutch helps with clearance. I started with a 6 spring but later changed. Some work needed on the off side footrest mounting. I have just finished some further mods today. I have been using the electric starter on it for 6 months now. I must admit it is looking good. If I can shrink down a picture I will post it.

Phil charges about £2000 to supply and install, takes just over a day, possibly only a day if you get to him really early! Money well spent! You might want to upgrade the dynamo although apparently the 6 Volt unit will just about do the trick. I have gone the whole hog with 12Volt everything plus negative earth! Phil also fitted a cigar lighter gizmo under the seat to plug intelligent charges into etc. when standing for long periods.

The 6 volt dynamo once changed to 12 volt using the regulator provided with the kit has no problem charging the system. Mine has been in use since 2016. It took me a day to fit the electric start kit to my B33. Fitting one to my M33 was a different ball game.
