Just rebuilt my front forks ( one hadn't even got an oil seal in it) and painted the headlight and trousers.
Looked at the steering damper and the friction disc was in a very bad condition and broken up.
On replacing the disc there still is a large gap between the disc and the bottom yoke. If the damper is tightened only the front part of the damper blade makes contact with the disc. I put a washer under the frame part of the blade to lift it which does close the gap somewhat but I feel the damper plate should be virtually parallel to the friction disc and bottom yoke.
I wondered if the large washer from the early friction dampers which has cut outs in it would fit just under the bottom yoke to take out the gap I've got. I'd give it a try if the cut outs fit the later damper nut.
Any thoughts?
