Title: A65 condensers which end is live/ground?
Post by: Bigmac on 07 Oct, 2021, 21:15
One end has a spade (male) connector the other a small nut, also my alternator has only two cables coming out, presume one goes for the ignition circuit and the other to the rectifier?

It's a 1966 a65 lightning.

Hi,
Fig1 for the condenser, nut to ground.
Fig2 for alternator, both to rectifier.

Best wishes...

Two cables coming from the alternator may mean the electrics are converted to 12 volts.
I don't think the polarity of the condenser matters as a lot of machines are converted from 6volts positive earth to 12 v negative earth and the existing condensers are left in place.

Thanks, mine are the external ones not mounted on the points, presume the nut end still goes to ground?

Yes

Tried again, and again still no spark does anyone have an easy to read wiring diagram? I even tried removing the condensers entirely in case they are faulty.

Made sure the points are insulated so they aren't grounding, maybe need to test the alternator but not entirely sure how to do that?

The alternator will not affect the starting its there for the charging. If you have a charged battery, check that there is voltage to the coils and to the end of the wire to the points. Remove one of the HT leads and hold near to the engine.Take the wire attached to the points and with the ign on tap the wire on the engine case, this should induce a spark from the coil. If so then you know the problem in in the points. A spark is induced when the points open.

echoing Idie above, my A10 and the T100 wont start with a flat battery also when started and the battery has failed to hold charge, the engine pops and bangs then dies. once going, check output back to the battery using a volt meter, should be around 13.5v at terminals.

this I find often as I throw more batteries away from lack of use or starting only that kills them from recharging time after time.

I will try with the battery, but was told it should work direct from the alternator.

So I just plug the negative from battery to the positives on the coils and coil negative back to the points?

Presume no need to earth the coils as they are on brackets already attached to the frame? I have treble checked the points and 100% not earthing when opened.

Sorry for all the questions

You only plug the negative from the battery to the positive on the coil if your bike is positive earth. If negative earth then the positive from battery goes to coil positive. The coil negative goes to the points. In case you didn't know when the points are closed current flows through the coil creating a magnetic field, when the points open the field collapses and creates a high voltage current in another set of windings which gives you a HT spark.
