I have been struggling with fitting this spring today to my A50 then found this forum post from 2017 - brilliant, worked first time. Thanks.

It's normally a straight forward job and takes about 3 minutes.
Put the spring onto the casing with the hook around the screw. Get a piece of thin strong cord, the stuff used on blinds is ideal. Loop the cord around the other hook on the spring and pull upwards, this pulls the hook on the spring up out of the way. Get the retaining washer and slide it onto the kick start spindle and put the flats into place. Lower the spring hook onto the the retaining washer hook and pull the cord out or cut it.
I hope that makes sense. it's straight forward once you have done it a few times.
The above is a reply that I got when I had the same problem on my 1963 A65 and it worked perfectly.

Reatively the same procedure except. I put the retaining washer first on then hold it place with a jubilee clip. Then pull the spring up behind it.
I use hard nylon cord and oil it before use so it slides out easily from the spring hook.

Hi,
I too have had issues fitting the kickstart return spring so made a tool as the images and drilled 2 holes in the kickstart plate. That solved the issue for me.
Best wishes...

And no more than an hour ago I was struggling with the same issue on my A65 (I've done it before but kinda forgot how).
I haven't got one of those really useful looking tools that you made Bess.
So tomorrow morning- bright and early, around ten-ish, I'll be fumbling around in the 'Jubilee clip jar' and using some top quality
nylon cord (well oiled... obviously) to achieve exactly what you have described....
Thank you all.... particularly on your sense of timing......
Dave.
Kickstart spring now in place- using jubilee clip and string.....
Many thanks,
Dave.

Good, I feel that I have at last suggested something useful.

Hi Mike,
You suggested laying my frame on the ground to fit my A65 engine :) :)
Thanks....
Mike, I've had nothing but good advice off you.
Likewise you too Bess ... and loadsa really helpful people on this great site.....
Not sure how far I would've got without it.....
As ever, many, many thanks,
Dave.
