Title: Leaking oil tank
Post by: Pete Gill on 19 Sep, 2021, 19:14
Hi All

It's a 1949 B31 rigid

I have a leak coming from the back of the oil tank on one of the seams where the mounting bolt enters.
I can't  really see much but it seeps slowly and soaks the back of the gearbox and drips.
Most likely metal fatigue ?
Can these be welded or brazed?
Advice would be much appreciated.
Pete

I don't see why to can't be welded or brazed, the metal is quite substantial. Personally I'd weld it for a stronger joint.
I have a spare B31 rigid oil tank which is about to be converted for a high level pipe on my B32. It will involve cutting a section from the front, forming a cutaway to clear the pipe. Also, the filter and oil feed will be relocated from the bottom of the tank to the front and the drain will be moved further back. It will be done using a mig welder. if it can't be welded I'm in trouble.  ;D
