Hi and good morning.
I am now at the point of needing to purchase exhaust pipes for my "in process" A65.
I would like to fit high level pipes and that puts me into an area that is new to me. I've seen pictures of several and really dont know where to go with this.
I dont wish to fit straight through pipes so I am looking for advice. Ultimately I would like high pipes with decent looking efficient??silencers.
Your help and advice appreciated.

Hi Mike,
I'll also be looking for a pair for my A50CC restoration when I get back to it (been distracted by old boat engines).
I did enquire with Armours a while back and they ony do one set which apparently both run down the nearside.

Not sure if that's what I'll go with as I think the Cyclone originally had high-level straight throughs on each side for the racing configuration and small silincers added for the road bikes.
Cheers,
Bernie

Thanks for that. I'll get in touch with them early next week when they are back at work.

Hi Mike, there was a post some time back with some photos of high pipes and I remember thinking " they look good I might go for those when my very slow rebuild gets to that stage " ( crank and cylinder are being machined at present ) I'm not sure but it may have been one of Bess,s posts. Cheers Dave.

i had these on my A65 and be aware they can be noisy, i had shorty silencers on and made little or no difference!
I liked the sound but i'm not sure anybody else did.

I took part in that discussion at the time, in fact I may well have kicked it off. AGE. However I have not resolved the situ during that time and so I thought I would have another dig. Engine is in Frame and built up except clutch so the requirment is urgentish.
Very interested in Derek's comment and opinion-the one thing I dont want to do is get it wrong cos I simply can't afford to. The cost of pipes dictates get it right first time. BTW Derek its the Golden Goose. (Well you named it)
So I guess what I'm looking for is high pipes that will take the normal Beesa silencers. I know I can make adaptors but that will always show as such.
Any help or advice gratefully accepted.

If you go to, which bike do go ride, go back about 3 pages and look for Firebird scrambler that may be of interest, good luck, Dave.

this is nice!
and it might not burn your legs!
:) :) :)
Thanks for that. I'll continue to dig around but now I have a better idea of where I may go. Coild well end up with normal. We'll see
Mike 8) 8) 8)
That really is nice Derek, don't suppose you have any info on it?

it came from rider magazine but i dont have any more than that, here's a bigger picture it looks even better!

Lovely bit of kit. US spec I would think 67/68/69. Pre OIF but QD hub, later speedo drive. Those pipes are what I would like but cant find anything like them. Conundrum!!!!!!!!!!!!!

these are the ones mike

Hi Derek.
Thanks for that. Further thought--I have the earlier brake with the small lever just "behind" the kick start and the rod running down the RH side and looking at it I wonder if those pipes would foul the brake action.
Thoughts??

I've just looked at those and I have no idea how I missed them cos I looked on that site several times(age????).
The blurb says fits all 1963/72 so I'll give it a go.
Thanks for your help and interest===we'll see.

Hi Mike,
If you get them make sure you spray some good quality high temp. exhaust paint in them. Those tight curves are more likely to discolour and coating the inside helps to prevent it.
Dave.

Thanks to all for interest and good wordz.
I bit the bullet earlier and went mad. Bought the pipes, clamps, guards and brackets.
This lead to the suggestion that perhaps my bikes dont need any bits for a long long time.
Well!!!! anyway I'll let you know.
Dave what paint are we talking about.
They fit all pre OIF.

Hi,
With new pipes or even very clean used ones I spray the inside of the pipes with a very high temperature paint. It is the type that can be sprayed on exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes as well. If you can fit a tube to the spray nozzle you can spray further down inside the pipes. It does help to prevent discolouration on initial use and lasts a long time.
Dave.

Hi Dave and thnks for that. As I recall a copper wire wrap around the top of the pipes has much the same affect.
Mike 8) 8) 8)
Hi,
Copper wire does not look that nice and I think that the discolouration is more evident where the pipe starts to curve. Swept back pipes and the tighter curve on the short part of a siamese system seem to be more affected. The pipes you are fitting have quite a tight curve so the paint will definitely help.
Back in the day people also fitted chromed springs for 'looks'. After awhile though the pipes would discolour and the whole thing looked tatty unless regularly taken off and cleaned.
Dave.

My pipes have arrived not yet tried to fit them but I shall later just "to see". Well new toy status.

Pictures please Mr Farmer, when you are ready of course!
;D
They look really good - and I'll be getting a pair for the A50CC when I get back to it :)
Look forward to seeing Mike's pics!
Cheers,
Bernie
Ditto the above.😊😊

Hi
Well this is where we are at. They are only offerred up at this stage.I'll keep you in the loop.
Mike 8) 8) 8)
you see that is good, the ones i had were far too high and noisy, and did i mention the leg burns!
:D
:) :) :) :)
Hi.
This is not turning out so well at the mo. The LH pipe fits Ok. However the RH pipe is being naughty. When its offerred up in postion. If I fit the pipe snug against the frame the pipe fouls the brake lever(through type with up pointing intermediate lever). If I pull it out far enogh for that to clear , the kick start won't pass the pipe.
Tomorrow I shall speak to the sellers and probab go down the normal pipe route====sad. Have to see what BURTON says about it.
Mike 8) 8) 8) 8)
Hi Mike,
As you are not doing a standard bike you may be able to replace the two piece rod and the little pivot arm with a one piece rod. Make it bit thicker so it is less likely to try and straighten under braking and bend it to pass through the frame and avoid the exhaust pipe.
Dave.
:) :) :)
Hi Dave.
Thanks for that. I have thought of a lot of possible ways to correct this but have decided to forego this particular item.
Spoke to Burton earlier and after chatting for a while it was concluded that they will not fit a bike with the cross over shaft.
They are tooooo expensive to take a chance with. So initially its back to normal pipes, not that such is a problem, in truth the high pipes was seriously only a whim anyway. Its not even really a delay.
Bugger
Mike 8) 8) 8) 8)
Mike, are you sending the high levels back or might they be up for sale to go on an A50CC that I know of ;)
I don't think I have the crossover as - I believe - that was only '62 '63 frames.... (I need to check mine!)
Cheers,
Bernie

Hi Bernie
Sorry they are gone back. I would have needed to ask what I paid for them so I guess that you will be as well off buying new.
I am actually partly trading them for a set of "normal" pipes.
Again sorry.
