Hello all. See my topic A10 Odd Cylinder Sizes of 12 August. After several static runs totaling approx 30 mintes I have decided to investigate the smoking problem in more detail. I have removed the head, cylinder and pistons to check further but before that I want to check if the crankcase breathing system is working -- without removing the inner cover of the timing side. Is this possible? If so can anyone explain/describe how, especially as the exit port in the drive side crankcase has no pipework fitted and the port is extremely difficult to get at.
hi,
yes if you have done a rebuild and the pistons rings have not bedded in after only a few miles yes it might trough a bit of oil out the breather, also yes you can check the end flout of the cam as there should not be any play as the Breather will Not work right, I had the same problem so I took off the inner case and put in a thicker 5/32 cork ring put it back together and got no more problem. I also fitted a pipe in the breather hole and took it out the back of the bike so if any oil did come out it would Not throw oil all over the engine and then thinking I have an oil leak from somewhere else.
Hope this helps.
Mo
Hi,
As Mo says, there should be be no movement in the 'top hat' breather sleeve. It is unlikely that this has slipped but it is possible. The inner case will have to be removed to check it but the end of the breather drilling will be exposed and it should be possible to see if there is any blockage as I think this is now open to the outlet on the back of the case on the primary side. Air should now be able to blow through. When refitting the cork it should be thick enough to stop the inner case from sitting against the joint face. A couple of mm cork will easily compress as the case is tightened up and make a good seal. Put a bit of engine oil on the outer face to help it turn when first assembled.
Dave.
Thanks for the replies Dave and Mo. Looking at the aptly named "top hat breather sleeve" there was no across the engine play but there is a hole through which one could put air through to check the air passages are clear to atmosphere at the bottom of the stroke but closed at the top of the stroke. So I did and they were. I could easily have missed checking it out closely if you hadn't mentioned it-so thank you both. Ride safe all.
