Title: A65 leaky primary case
Post by: DAVE BRADY on 06 Aug, 2021, 21:16
Hi,

Why this time?  I have never really had a problem with a leaky primary on an A65.  On this particular bike again no real problem but.....   At first I thought the level and drain plugs were the problem so re did them.  Likewise the other inspection/adjustment cover/caps but to no avail.  It was as though there was pressure in the primary case.  Worse case scenario is that the crank seal has gone but is has only done a thousand miles.  Then a light bulb glimmered and then became bright as I remembered a thread on this Forum about the same topic.  Part of it referred to a comment by SRM that we tend to over fill our primary case and that can result in a bit of a leak.  Although I have never really had a problem before I had one now.
My clutch needed a bit of adjustment so off came the cover after all the oil was drained out.  The seal was fine after looking with an inspection mirror and if the seal had gone the primary oil would be contaminated with engine oil and the level would have gone up.  Reference the workshop manual - 140mls approximately was the information gleaned.
So exactly 140mls put in the primary and now after a run out, no external lubrication evident.
Go by the book - you know it makes sense (in most cases).

Dave.
