Hi All,
I asked this same question April last year when I had an oil weep dripping off the speedo cable. The bike is an early A50 with the cable exiting the gearbox.
I had the engine out at the end of last year and completely rebuilt it as the bores were very worn and the timing side bush had about 15-20 thou play in it.
I didnt do anything to the speedo drive in the inner timing case as the weep wasnt too bad.
I wish I had now! I am losing about a soup spoon of oil each day. For some reason it has just become like that. I assume it is gearbox oil. I did fit a new cable after the rebuild and its been fine for quite a few miles.
Questions:
1. Can the timing cover which has the drive assembly in it be removed without draining the engine oil? I assume it is gearbox oil that is leaking so will have to drain the gearbox.
2. How does the drive come apart?
3. I cannot find reference to the necessary oil seals/ O rings so may have to find some Viton ones to fit but am concerned that I dont want the leak again
( cant see anything on the Drags pages).
Cheers
Adrian
Anyone?
Firstly you would have to drain the gearbox oil, but not the engine oil. You might get away with just removing the outer timing cover to remove the speedo drive retaining pin. The speedo drive assembly should then 'twist out' ? On the attached, I have highlighted the 'O' rings that may require replacement plus associated washers etc... I wouldn't think the 65-3377 bush would fall out if you removed the speedo drive assembly, but it's worth being aware of this before replacing the drive.
Hi,
The oil leak sometimes appears from badly made aftermarket cables, between the outer cable and the crimped section by the gearbox connection. A length of black heat shrink over the crimped section and outer cable should solve it. Or buy a better cable from here:

The A10 and Triumph use the same bush part number 65-3396, you might find using a square section seal part number 57-0948 will provide a better seal around the bush and case:

The inner timing cover has to come off to get the drive out.
I believe it is still awkward to get the drive out when the retaining peg is out.
I certainly cannot pull it out of the casing so assume it has to be pushed out into the casing.
Wrt the cable, I got one from Chronometrics but that leaked around the crimp so did heat shrink it and also put a good fibre washer between it and the drive assembly.
It's just a bloody pain that after rebuilding the whole engine, I didn't change the rubber seal on the drive!
Hi,
You are correct they can be awkward they also can be easy, if yours is leaking it will probably be easy.
Best wishes...
