Title: A65 Rocket conversion to 12V and Pazon ignition
Post by: Cmcl.1959 on 22 Jul, 2021, 13:20
Hi to all again,
Some of the goodies I need to carry on with the 12v and electronic ignition have arrived and I'm keen to get going.
My bike I have discovered left the factory in December 1963 and as a result does not have the notch in the crank for the tool to set it at 34 degree BTDC. I have a dti which I'll use to find TDC on cylinder one and I've been trying to work out how far down the cylinder the piston sits at 34 degrees BTDC when I rotate the engine back. I have a copy of the owners' instruction manual from 1966 and it mentions using a rod with two marks on it (presumably one for TDC and the other for 34 degrees BTDC) and the distance down the bore will be 0.357" (9.0678mm). Is this right?
I plan to get a timing disk and attach it to the primary drive side (can anyone advise on the size of bolt needed to fit in the rotor nut), get my marks for TDC and fully advanced on the rotor and stator and strobe them once up and running but I thought I'd make a start while I'm waiting.
Looks like I was calculating it wrong as I was taking it as the crank turning through 180 degrees to move the piston the stroke of 74mm from BDC to TDC which gave me 0.4111mm/degree and 34 degrees would be 13.9778mm before TDC. Obviously got the wrong end of the stick.
Anyway if anyone can advise on the bolt size or the correct distance from the piston to TDC at 34 degrees it would be appreciated and ease a tired mind!

Thanks
Clarke

Page from the 1962-65 workshop manual giving degrees to piston displacement.

Thanks Julian,
A great help.
