Hi all, what would I set tappets at on a 1954 A7SS? Opinions, I set at recommendation and they seem noisy to me, just asking
Thanks
Barry
My uncle used to say "a slappy tappet is a happy tappet"
Yes! Probably good advice, thanks :)
Hi,
The recommended tappet settings are 0.008" for the inlet, and 0.010 for exhaust, the previous settings of 0.010" and 0.016" should be used if max power is required,
Best wishes...
Hi,
0.010" and 0.016" are also for the iron head models. I remember as a rookie rider with only a Haynes manual and I would set my tappet clearance at 0.008 and 0.010 and wonder why after a few miles and with a hot engine all the power would go. I would stop and wonder why the clearance had all gone. So after slackening off the adjusters and burning my hands in the process the bike would be back to how it should be. Eventually I realised that I did not have and aluminium head on my A10 and that iron heads run hotter and so expand a bit more and so need a bit more clearance on the valves.
Dave.
Hi,
Sorry should have read the whole post:
A7 SS is 0.008" inlet 0.012" exhaust
Best wishes...
In the library section there is a service sheet dated July 1955 which states for the Shooting Star .008" inlet and .012" exhaust. The early A7 A10 models had a different camshaft a354 camshaft which later changed to a 356 camshaft and I believe there is also a 357 camshaft, the number is stamped on the end of the camshaft and there are different recommended tappet settings for each camshaft.
This service sheet from 1959 may help - revised tappet setings for all A group models - 8 thou inlet 10 thou exhausts.
The annotation from Arthur Lupton says for the 67 356 cam only.
I run my A10 with a 357 cam at 10 and 12 thou as recommended by Eddie Dow.
Julian, sorry I should have said in my original post. I'm running my a7ss on a 357 cam
