Title: c15g damage on oil seal and housing.
Post by: beezabob on 04 Jul, 2021, 20:18
Hi, I have a c15g which on pulling apart have found the crankshaft nut has been rubbing on the oli seal housing damaging both the seal and the housing removing close to 1mm and destroying the seal. I have split the crankcases and there are no shims on the crankshaft . I am guessing i need to shim to space the crank away from this side. Any opinions welcome. Thanks.

Hi Beeza, a picture might help of the damage.
its possible JB weld could build up any worn away area, as heat from welding might distort the bearing housing. cases would need to be clean and dry.
I suspect, if there were no seals , tha bike ran quiet and no problems, you could get away without shims. But, you could measure the various items, crank across bearing faces and check the depths from both joint faces then add them and compare to the crank, adding or deducting the thickness of a bearing. If its a bi metal soft bearing on timing side, and worn, you may consider a replacement and rebore in which case measure using that dimension.

Thanks for that chaz, What you say makes sense about measuring the crankshaft and crankcases, It is a roller bearing on the timing side and an end feed. It wa rattly sounding above idle but i think that was because oil wasnt getting through to the bearings due to the damaged seal. All bearings replaced now. i have added a pic .. not pretty.
