Title: 1965 A65 Lightning side stand length.
Post by: geraldhattrick75 on 30 Jun, 2021, 20:04
Bro in Law pointed out, when he saw my bike on the side stand, that it was at the point of tipping over... (that's how far it was leaning over)

He's right. The slightest pressure on the bars will tilt it right over.

So, my question is what is the length of the correct side-stand?....
Please.

(Visiting the Classic bike show on Sunday....... Maybe I can buy the correct side stand, once I know the length. )

Thanks in advance,
Dave.

Alternatively, does this look like it might be right?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi,

That looks about right and the price looks good.  Have you thought about altering the one you have?  Perhaps it has been bent by a previous owner to give a more rakish lean angle.  Post a photo of the bike leaning on it.

Dave.

my T100 leant over too far, close to falling, mainly due to the fork end being splayed out too far, also the A50 Im working on now was found to have the welded on lug on the frame had come unwelded. been welded now before it was re powder coated.

Hi All,
Has anyone purchased from "British Vintage Factory"?

Something doesn't seem right, prices low, images from other sites and website purchases via phone.

Best wishes...

Bess, I see they are working on the web site so ordering suspended on it.
as for prices, maybe like me, I do not sell from a shop so dont need to recover percentages for rent and rates etc.
this way I can sell on what I dont need at a lower price to help others.
as an example, I need 20 rollers for a clutch but buy a 100, so, they are purchased at bulk price, I can then sell the other 4 lots cheaper.

Ive bought job lots of filters in the past for modern bikes, probably recovered my initial cost so whats left is available cheaper to others. I started selling service kits , filters and plugs on ebay . now others are doing it too. Another example is, our local bike shop was sold off when the two old boys decided to retire, I missed the sale by a couple of days or I could have owned it, as the new owners had no idea what they were doing , they sold off all the spare parts on ebay. I could have bought the business for £40,000, now with all assets stripped, the new owners are advertising the business for £79,950!!

Hi Chaz,
I have been buying from "Classic Bike Parts uk" for a number of years and noticed the images for the stainless parts from his website are identical to British Vintage Factory, one example:

https://classicbikepartsuk.uk/product/ajs-ariel-bsa-triumph-norton-lucas-altette-horn-bracket-stainless-steel-h24/

https://britishvintagefactory.com/product/lucas-altette-horn-mounting-bracket-stailness-steel/

I did contact him to see if he was trading with a different name. He did say a number of his images are being used, even down to his reference numbers. He is investigating.

I guess buyer beware, if anyone buys from British Vintage Factory can you give some feedback as the prices seem keen.

Thanks...

Just checked mine; it measures 350mm from the pivot bolt to the end and it is at angle of 45deg as close as I can measure. It is also straight, apart from the foot obviously!
It might be worth checking that the pivot bolt is not warn, it's in an ideal position to collect road dirt.

Thanks for all the helpful info folks.

Re measurements and shape, mine is a totally different (straight) shape and has a flat plate on the bottom,,,,, And it fouls the centre stand spring when not down......

Having seen your picture and the ones from the website I mentioned, I have the wrong one on mine.

I'll check what's available at the bike show on Sunday first, then look into the British vintage stand if there's nowt at the show......

Thanks for straightening me out.......

Much appreciated,
Dave.

Hi,

That looks like the leg from a universal clamp on type stand.

Dammit....

I've been duped.

I bought all those bits in good faith........

Apart from which, and as Martin mentioned- the pivot bolt hole looks a bit big which aint helping....

So, the bike show it is, followed by browsing t'internet...... (and enquiries into 'britishvintage....')

P.S. I was obviously kidding about being duped......

Apart from the side stand, that's a fine looking bike, a credit to you.

That's very kind Martin..... Have to say it wouldn't look like this without the help I get from this site.

I'm off to the bike show now but happy to post piccies as I progress. (still got chunks missing....)

Hi, great to see you are making such a brilliant job of restoring the "old gel". The pics are absolutely great and do you credit! The close up pic of the side stand resting on the spring of the center stand bought back so many memories, that's exactly how she was from the very first day I encountered the bike in Sid's ownership back in the 70's and I never changed it all the years I had her as it never caused me any problems and she never fell over or off it. I have so many memories, as well as pictures, of the bike that I can share with you if you like, as i say its looking fantastic and I can't wait to see her finished. All the very best Mark

As Gerald's suggestion, can we see some pictures of Editor's Clubman please? They might provide inspiration to get back on the case......

Had a note from 'Editor' saying it's not his bike "It belongs to member James Rushton and we featured it in the January 2016 edition."

Sorry for any confusion.... (Did I mention how lovely it looked though?....)
