I filed a fibre washer to fit the oil tank oil filter (68-8328), and fitted a rubber ring washer (1/2"- ish) and tightened it up nicely.
After bunging a bit of Comma 20w/50 'Classic' oil in the tank, it started seeping out through the filter washer. (as you might expect with my standard of work..)
With a view to buying the correct washer/s, are the items I need 40- 8331 and 68- 8336? and any idea where I might get them please?
Many thanks,
Dave.
Google John Cronshaw, he advertises in Old Bike Mart by Mortons OR Dragonfly M/C's will have them.
Thanks for that, I'll get on to them.
Dave.
Hi,
Washer 40- 8331 is for the Thunderbolt and 68- 8336 is for the remaining models.
Best wishes...
Thanks for that Bess.
Any idea what the rubber washer is? (or might it have been a home bodge? (Which I have repeated...))
Dave.
Hi,
As you suspect it is probably a home bodge. In 1968 a O ring was used instead of the fibre washer, which the owner might have used.
It may be prudent and check if the filter plug you have has a groove for an O ring. If it has and the oil tank sealing face is good, maybe use an O ring instead of the fibre washer. However I have never completely sealed the plug with just an O ring. So rather than drain down the oil to try and solve the issue I now always used a little Hylomar with an O ring with success.
Best wishes...
I've got the slightly filed out fibre washer and a rubber 'O' ring in the middle... Come to think of it, I'm not really sure what the 'O' ring mates against, so it's probably not doing anything effective.
(still, I've just copied what was originally there....)
I have noticed over the past couple of days that the filter nut has allowed me to tighten it up a fair bit,so maybe I was being overly cautious when I first tightened it up... ish.
I'll check it over the next couple of days.
Thanks again Bess. (and everyone else)
Dave.
