Evening all,
I might have asked this a year or two ago, but can't find any posts on it, so maybe not.
I'm wondering whether to fit indicators to my 1965 B40F, mostly for safety reasons. Any thoughts, please, on 1) the general concept of fitting indicators to an old bike (ie pros and cons) and 2) any suitable ones which would not look too put of place.
Thanks as always. Phil
from the aesthetic point of view I find them ugly on old bikes but then I have added them to my 1952 M21 and a 1967 TR6 (legally required in Germany from 1962 on!).
They are a lifesaver in town, or anywhere with traffic, as giving hand signals (that are not recognised anyway) while playing with the throttle while surrounded by metal boxes piloted by prats on mobiles, you need any advantage you can get.
I used bar-end indicators as you only need 2 and they are relatively unobtrusive and it is mainly the traffic ahead of you that you need to inform about your intentions, although, as long as you are not too wide in the beam, following traffic should also be able to see the indicators as well .
Also there is no need to irreversably modify any part of the bike, apart from the rubber grips.
cheers
Pete
( also got a B31, B33, G80S and Triton and there is no way I will desecrate those with bloody Xmas tree lights! ;D ;D)
Hi Phil
I fitted lucas pattern indicators with leds to my A50 for safety reasons. I got everything from Paul Goff. If you fabricate some brackets to fix to the pinch bolts on the front trousers of the B40 and the rear number plate mount, you won't have to drill the bike.
Do make sure that you have a very visible warning light as leaving the indicators flashing can end up in trouble.
Thanks Paul. Could you just clarify what you mean by "trousers"? Phil
Further to my previous message just now, Paul, any chance of a couple of photos please? Phil
Look at the front of your bike and the metalwork that the suspension legs fit into is often referred to as trousers.
I'll add some pics. They're fitted differently on the A50; just 2 holes needed in the headlamp bracket. The warning light is between the speedo and rev counter.
The pic files are a bit big so I'll have to create new posts.
Front indicators
Rear indicators
Thanks very much Paul. Phil
