Title: Primary chaincase cover (1965 B40F)
Post by: Phil C on 18 Jun, 2021, 14:31
Hello everyone, Please have a look at these photos of my primary chaincase cover. In the vicinity of the drain plug hole, metal appears to have been cut away. I guess that's so that it can serve its purpose of indicating the oil level (when the screw is removed of course.) But it looks as though it might compromise the oil tightness of the seal when the screw is fitted. Is it meant to be like that?   Phil

The screw takes a fibre washer to seal.

Hi Phil,

If you look in your illustrated workshop manual and I would imagine your copy of RR, you will see that the bit that is 'missing' is at the lowest point in the case hence it is the drain screw as well as one the the screws that hold the case on.  If you look a bit further towards the front you will a small hole that serves to set the oil level when that screw is removed.

Dave.

Under the heads of the drain and level screws.

Just lost this (lengthy) message so am having to type it out again (grrr...)
Thanks for your help so far. The reason I was concerned about the cutaway was that the drain hole bolt of course also serves as one of the clamping bolts which seal the outer cover in place. I was concerned that, because of the cutaway, the bolt wouldn't be clamping on much gasket width and so there might be a tendency for the chaincase to leak at the gasket there. The LEVEL hole has no such cutaway - it has a hole drilled in the casing which joins up with the screwhole at right angles. Anyway, I assume from the responses so far that a cutaway of that extent at the drain hole is normal? Could someone just confirm that please?
Also, regarding the felt washers, I didn't know about them. I guess they are to stop leaks along the screwthreads, which makes sense. But (see photos) the Allen bolt heads fit into counterbores, and don't have much shoulder width, so the washers would be very narrow (width between hole and o/d)? Could someone confirm that there should be tiny felt washers in the counterbores?
Thanks very much.    Phil

Phil you just need a simple fibre washer like the one in the first photo they are 1/4 inch bore 3/8 inch outside diameter and about 1 mm thick.

Shown in the parts book (second photo) as part 40 0740 but you can get them on ebay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124739160081?hash=item1d0b088811:g:rUUAAOSw1rpf7x1G

Dont use felt, that would simply break up when the screw is tightened.

Thanks very much Julian. I see that part is listed (at least on the Dragonfly website parts diagram) as "ally washer", but also listed is 67-1079 fibre washer. Seems to me ally wouldn't work very well. Anyway, I'll get some fibre ones. So glad you mentioned it. Thanks again.     Phil
