Post by: royblackburn1@btinternet. on 12 Jun, 2021, 20:22
Hi all , after a good ride out my gears become harder to select knowing the problem I pull up and adjust the clutch cable , any idea why the cable becomes slack it not a new thing I keep putting up with it but now I will try to sort it out with your help when the engine is cold say next morning theres no slack at the lever so  have to slack off a shade, thanks Roy ???

Hi Roy,

This tends to happen when the clutch gets hot such as in slow traffic with a lot of clutch use and some slipping being needed.  Is the primary oil up to level as this helps a bit with cooling?   I always try to select neutral just before stopping to make it a bit easier.  Usually, once the traffic is cleared the clutch cools down again and the adjustment is restored.

Hi,
It maybe prudent to check the primary chain tension along its full length of travel. If it is adjusted 'tight' or with a tight spot when the engine heats the gear selection is harder.

Best wishes...

Thanks Bess will have a look, a few years back someone wrote on the forum that he used automatic transmission fluid in  the primary side I wonder if anyone knows why does it keep cooler than sae oil or what if any benefits would it have thanks Roy

Hi Roy,

The slack in the cable is the result of the plates expanding and so becoming a bit thicker.  In affect this means that the pressure plate is moved out slightly and so increasing the clearance of the push rod. This very small amount is multiplied at the lever.
I use ATF in my A65s and my wife's A10 and have done for many thousands of miles.  There is less likelihood of slip and drag/sticking plates.  The different colour also helps to identify the source of a leak.
A debate may now ensue as I am sure many people use other oils for their primary lubrication.
If the chain is too tight it will cause problems as Bess suggests.
