Title: Rear brake shoe problem
Post by: tige on 25 May, 2021, 19:03
Hi lads, i have a 1965 A65 star. ive had a set of rea brake shoes sent out because both the ones that where in it when i bought it where wrong, And the ones i ordered off line 1st time round where also wrong , both had flat ends, big learning curve for me, the one's i ordered from dragonfly are also not quit right, they sit slightly offset on the pin, i made a phone call to burton bike bits and was told no one makes those shoes for the 65 any more. the part number being 68-5516. I do not even have the original ones to get re lined. first thought was to get a hub pin made off set, but if it ever moved could lock the back wheel up, any suggestions idea,s.
many thanks in advance steve.

Photo shows the brake shoe setup on the full width rear hubs. This is on a late Super Rocket but same floating shoes are used on the 1962-65 full width A65 rear.

In the photo the lower shoe, the leading shoe, is part 68 5515 and the other, the trailing shoe is part 68 5516. They dont interchange and need to go the right way around or the braking power will be severly reduced.

Hi,
I think you need a 68-5515 leading and a 68-5516 trailing as Julian stated, some suppliers are offering alternatives, I don't know if they are correct but maybe worth pursuing:

If not try here, but read the article carefully before phoning.

My recollection of the shoes 65 5901, for the 7 inch half width hub, ia that they have a different diameter pivot to the full width iron hub shoes.

Hi,

Am I mistaken or shouldn't the end of the shoe with the steel bit be on the operating rather than the pivot?

Dave.

Photo shows the correct assembly. The other way around there would be a problem with the cam and the shape of the pivot pad ends.

This service bulletin explains.

the shoes that came from dragonfly are both the same which ever way round you sit them, so identical. i have placed an order for the 68-5515 and 68-5516 shoes on the British only Austria site. i will come back and let you know how it goes, thank you so much for your help.
