Title: Conrod bolt settings
Post by: Dibble on 25 May, 2021, 14:53
just treating hornet motor to a new set of the latest offering from the BSA factory in the form of steel capped rods circa 72ish?. My question is does the torque setting differ from that given in the 67 workshop manual? My library does not yet extend to copy for every year of manufacture! Are there any other points to consider before "bolting up" ? Thanks one and all for your invaluable advice given to my previous posts. Regards Dave.

Hi,
I am fairly sure the attached settings were the latest update from BSA.

Best wishes...

Hi Chaz,
Yes, I just checked the 1966 service sheet update and it also specified 22lb.ft.

Best wishes...

Hi Dibble,

Plenty of oil on the journal.  Some people use an oil specifically for assembly but a good engine oil is fine.  Do not be tempted to tighten a bit more for luck as this may over stretch the bolts.  Unless specified by the bolt manufacturer I do not use any lube on the threads as this can give a false torque reading.

Dave.

I always coat bearing surfaces, bearings and most internal parts  with the engine oil Im going to use in the bike, that way no chance of contamination or non mixing, oil can squirt through the crank to fill the sludge trap and ensure oil flows out of all holes, then build up rods and squirt more oil through. when cases are joined I squirt more through oilways in castings, messy but make sure its in there.
