I would like to convert my 1953 Golden Flash Plunger to 12v and electronic ignition, which make of electronic ignition would most suitable for my bike as I have no knowledge at all, any help would be very welcome, many thanks,
Hi,
I would consider a Alton generator with belt drive complimented with a capacitor discharge ignition as it doesn't need a separate power system, this site will help:

I would suggest this simple and relatively inexpensive 12v conversion route:
https://dynamoregulators.com/documents/improved%20charging%20BSA%20A7-10.pdf
and then go for Boyer Bransden or Pazon ignition,=.
If you don't ride regularly use a motobatt M9 AGM battery
:) :) :)
A friend of mine :) has just run a couple of experiments with Boyer v Pazon.(On the same two bikes) Not much in it but Pazon showed a smoother advance/acceleration curve on the thingymometer. So I'm going to fit Pazon on current A65 resto_bit more expensive but not a lot.

Hi,
The Pazon also has a wider range so the starting is a bit easier as the ignition is more retarded. I think the later Boyer is improved in this regard over the earlier ones.
My wife's A10 has one of the later Altons that has little magnetic resistance so the belts last a lot longer. The first one lasted tens of thousands of miles over a 14 year period mostly running with lights on. At the time of going down the Alton route the quality of dynamo rebuilds and 12v regulators was not that good but if starting from scratch today I would get a good dynamo rebuild and a DVR2 from Dynamo Regulators Ltd.. A Kirby-Rowbotham mag. replacement with Boyer has also stood the test of time. Not original looking but not too expensive. Again, today I would go for a Pazon for the easier starting.
The BTH system is probably the ultimate solution for the ignition.
Dave.
Thanks for all helpful replies, just another thought is it possible to leave my 6v existing system with magneto 6v positive earth and fit electronic ignition if so any recommendations regarding this alternative option, many thanks for your advice,
Good morning,
I think I have seen 6v EI but the magneto will probably have to go or there may be one that can have the trigger in the mag. body. Unless you go for the BTH arrangement you will need to fit a coil/coils and the small electronic box. Do a google search and you should find it.
Dave.
Hi Mike I have had a Pazon fitted to my A65 for about 9/10 years now the only thing you have to remember is that you do need a fully charged battery, I made the mistake of over one winter I let the battery go below 12v and what happens then is when you come to start the bike the Pazon ignition goes to full advance and you get a hefty kick back.

Hi Thanks for that bit of good advice-- there's always something to learn on this forum.

If you fit Boyer, Pazon, Thorspark or any other system which needs a dual output ignition coil you need to plan where to fit it and the on/off switch on the bike.
I fitted (and now removed) SRM/Boyer system on my swinging arm A10 and fitted coil and Boyer box in the tool box and needed to extend the HT leads so they reached the plugs.
Hi,
As suggested in my first post, I actually have the Alton and CDI, purchased from BTH, link included.
If you're going to keep the 6v I would definitely consider a CDI system as its self contained. The coils from BTH are easily hid behind the "ski slope" and the HT leads rerouted to the plugs from under the tank. To offset the cost I sold my original Magneto which went to Japan.
The CDI unit is real easy to set up with a handy micro adjustment you can play with when in place, I've never had an issue since.
Best wishes...
I fitted a BTH system to replace my mag about 15 years ago and haven't had to touch it since. It transformed the bike, is of course independant of the electical system and battery but was expensive.
Thanks for all replies much appreciated, After all that decided to stick to the original ignition system as she is a good starter with a fine magneto spark, renewed contact breaker assembly to a more modern version (easier for adjustment) also renewed high tension pickups and ht leads etc, many thanks, Rich,
