Title: Rectifier location
Post by: wardy on 10 May, 2021, 09:49
Hi fellow victims - getting a new wiring harness installed on a '71 Lightning - where exactly would the rectifer be fitted? It came attached to the old harness but not the bike...

Could you lay the old harness alongside the new one, on the bike, and see what it lines up.... Bracket/ bolt hole?.....

Mine's a 1965/ 69 Lightning build, but I'm inclined to stick my stuff anywhere convenient.... On a nice shiney alloy bracket mind...

Thanks Gerald. Yes I can pin it down reasonably closely from the harness (it would have to "reach", as it were). I guess any convenient earthed mounting would do!

 :) :) :)

I fitted a couple of solid state jobbies. One under the seat on top of the oil tank. Seems ok. For the other I made a bracket and fitted it on the steering steady where the heat sink was originally---right in the air flow..

I'm happy to send a pic to anyone interested.

From memory, on the OIF models, the original Lucas rectumfrier was bolted to the underside centre of the electrics plate under the seat. There was enough room in the triangle between battery carrier, elec plate and mudguard. Not enough room for the solid state reg/rectifier though. The Zener was bolted to a hole in the back of the RH airbox which became the heatsink.
I fitted a solid state Reg/Rectifier by bolting it to the underside of the battery carrier base. It's in an airflow as the inlets to the airboxes are close by drawing air in. Mine was there for years and probably still is.
